Wind River Range — Alpine Pack-In & Badlands Finale, WY

Destination: Dubois & Wind River Range, WyomingNights: 5Group: 48Season: July, August, SeptemberEstimated: $2,200–$3,400 per person

A five-day horse pack into the Cirque of the Towers—granite spires rising 3,000 feet from turquoise lakes—guided by Bitterroot Ranch's seasoned outfitters, who've been threading these trails since 1982. Nights in wall tents at 10,000 feet, cast-iron dinners of elk and morel risotto cooked over camp stove, sleeping bags zipped under the Milky Way so bright it casts shadows. The final night, descend to Dubois proper: a soak at Hot Springs State Park's natural thermal pools, then dinner at Nora's Fish Creek Inn—trout caught that morning, butter-browned, served with huckleberry pie—before driving the Badlands loop at golden hour, badlands striped in rust and cream, the light turning everything sacred.

Questions

What's the riding experience required?
Intermediate to confident; you'll be in the saddle 5–6 hours on day one and two, then shorter days as you settle into camp. Bitterroot Ranch pairs you with a horse matched to your skill.
How cold does it get at altitude?
Nights dip to 35–45°F even in July and August; the ranch provides insulated sleeping bags and wool blankets. Layers are non-negotiable—merino base, fleece, windproof shell.
What if someone can't ride the full distance?
Bitterroot Ranch can arrange a shorter day-ride alternative or base-camp stay with hiking and fishing instead; call ahead to customize.
