White Sands & Cloudcroft — Desert Dunes to Alpine Dark Sky, NEW MEXICO

Destination: White Sands National Park & Cloudcroft, New MexicoNights: 3Group: 410Season: March, April, October, NovemberEstimated: $900–$1,400 per person

Sand-sledding into the gypsum dunes of White Sands at golden hour—the girls descending in silence, the only sound the hiss of wooden sleds on white sand and the wind. That night, a 7,000-foot climb to The Lodge at Cloudcroft, where the dark sky is so complete you can see the Milky Way's dust. Rebecca's Café in nearby Alamogordo serves green chile that tastes like the earth itself; breakfast the next morning at the lodge's restaurant overlooks the Sacramento Mountains. A farm tour through Heart of the Desert's pistachio orchards—the ritual of harvest, the taste of nuts still warm from the sun—before the final night's stargazing from the lodge's observatory deck, wool blankets and thermals of hot chocolate spiked with local spirits.

Questions

What's the drive like between White Sands and Cloudcroft?
About 90 minutes through the Tularosa Basin—high desert scrub giving way to pine forest as you climb. Rent an SUV; the road is paved but winding, and the elevation change is real.
Will we actually see stars?
Cloudcroft sits in a designated Dark Sky Community; on clear nights (most in spring and fall), the Milky Way is vivid enough to cast shadows. Bring a red-light flashlight to preserve night vision.
How strenuous is the farm tour?
Heart of the Desert's pistachio walk is gentle—mostly flat orchard paths, about an hour. Wear closed-toe shoes for the grove; the ground is uneven but not technical.
