Hacienda del Sol Desert Pool Weekend — Tucson, AZ

Destination: Tucson, AZNights: 3Group: 410Season: October, November, December, January, February, March, AprilEstimated: $1,100–$1,900 per person

A 1929 hacienda turned desert resort tucked into the Catalina Foothills — the same property where Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn used to disappear for a week at a time. Saturday morning: a sunrise horseback ride out of the resort's working stables into Catalina State Park, prickly pear blooming in March, a wrangler-led canter back across the wash. Brunch at The Grill at Hacienda del Sol, then an afternoon at the resort pool with the Catalinas filling the western horizon. Saturday night dinner at El Charro Café downtown — the oldest continuously operating Mexican restaurant in the US, family-run since 1922. Decompression on Sunday with a slow drive up Mount Lemmon to the pine forests at 9,000 ft, picnic lunch at the Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven before the airport.

Questions

When does the desert bloom?
Sonoran wildflower peak is mid-March to mid-April depending on the winter rain. Saguaro flowers (creamy white, on the crown) bloom in May.
How is Tucson different from Scottsdale?
Smaller, dustier, more Sonoran wild — the saguaros are denser, the food is more borderlands, the spa scene is less corporate.
Closest airport?
Tucson International (TUS) is 25 minutes from the foothills. Phoenix (PHX) is 90 min and gives more flight options.
