Mount St. Helens & Spirit Lake — Volcano by Helicopter, OR

Destination: Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument & Portland, OregonNights: 4Group: 48Season: June, July, August, SeptemberEstimated: $2,200–$3,400 per person

Helicopter descent into the crater of Mount St. Helens with Hillsboro Aviation, circling the obsidian dome and Spirit Lake's ghostly forest of bleached logs — a landscape still raw from 1980. Johnston Ridge Observatory hike at dawn, sulfur air and wildflowers, the mountain's scar visible from every angle. Three nights at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood's south face, where the ritual unfolds: morning yoga in the heated outdoor pool overlooking the peak, dinners of smoked salmon and marionberry tart in the stone dining room, final evening in Portland's coffee quarter — Coava Roastery's single-origin pour-overs and a vinyl crawl through Music Millennium and Jackpot Records, records in hand, the kind of night that feels like a ceremony.

Questions

Is the helicopter ride smooth?
Hillsboro Aviation uses a six-seat Piper Cherokee; the flight is 45 minutes of steady altitude gain and crater views, not turbulent. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket — the cabin is unheated at 8,000 ft.
What's the Johnston Ridge hike like?
Five miles round-trip, moderate grade, 1,300 ft elevation gain; the observatory sits at 4,200 ft with unobstructed views of the crater and dome. Early morning (6 a.m. start) avoids afternoon crowds and cloud cover.
Can we do this in summer only?
Yes — the observatory and helicopter tours operate June through September; snow closes Johnston Ridge Road October through May. July and August are warmest but busiest; June and September offer solitude and wildflowers.
