Mendocino Mushroom Forage Weekend — Mendocino Coast, CA

Destination: Mendocino + Albion, CANights: 3Group: 48Season: November, December, January, FebruaryEstimated: $1,900–$3,100 per person

A foggy December morning with a guided forage in the Jackson Demonstration State Forest — chanterelles under the redwood duff, candy caps in the bishop pine, hedgehogs on the leeward slopes. The bride leaves with a basket and a sketch of the polypore she found. Lunch is a hand-rolled cavatelli with the morning's chanterelles at the Albion River Inn dining room with a window over the sea stacks. Spa afternoon at the Stanford Inn's eco-spa overlooking the Big River estuary. Saturday night dinner at Cafe Beaujolais — a long farmhouse table, mushroom course in three preparations. Decompression on Sunday with a sea-stack walk at Russian Gulch and a slow drive south on Highway 1 back to Sea Ranch for the airport hand-off.

Questions

Is it legal to forage in Jackson State?
Yes — California allows personal-use mushroom foraging up to 5 lbs/day. Going with a credentialed guide (the Mendocino Coast forage scene is small but real) is strongly recommended for ID.
Best month?
Mid-November through early February for chanterelles. Candy caps are an autumn-into-winter hit. Avoid summer — too dry.
Closest airport?
Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County (STS) is a 2-hour drive south. SFO is 3.5 hours. The drive on Highway 128 through Anderson Valley is part of the trip.
