Lassen Volcanic National Park — Geothermal Ritual & Dark Sky Vigil, CA

Destination: Lassen Volcanic National Park & Chester, CaliforniaNights: 3Group: 410Season: July, August, SeptemberEstimated: $1,200–$1,800 per person

Three days in the sulfur-scented cathedral of Bumpass Hell—a 1.5-mile descent into hissing fumaroles and mineral pools that steam like a fever dream—followed by afternoons soaking in the naturally heated spring-fed pool at Drakesbad Guest Ranch, where the water runs 106 degrees and the Sierra pines frame the sky. Nights at Lassen Mineral Lodge in Chester, a 1920s timber lodge with stone fireplaces and deep-set windows, then a final evening with Lassen Dark Sky Festival rangers: a guided stargazing ritual on the lodge's meadow, red-light flashlights, the Milky Way so vivid it casts shadows. A bachelorette as geological pilgrimage.

Questions

How strenuous is Bumpass Hell?
The trail is 1.5 miles each way with 500 feet of elevation loss—moderate, with sulfur smell and boardwalk sections over geothermal features. Wear sturdy boots and bring water; the landscape is otherworldly and unforgiving.
Will the hot spring pool be crowded?
Drakesbad's spring-fed pool is reserved for lodge guests only, so your group will have it nearly to yourselves during off-peak afternoons. The water is naturally 106 degrees year-round.
What if clouds block the stars?
The rangers will reschedule the stargazing session to the clearest night of your stay; July and August have the highest clear-sky probability in the region.
