Boundary Waters Canoe Area — Loon Song & Portage Ritual, MN

Destination: Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Ely, MinnesotaNights: 4Group: 48Season: June, July, August, SeptemberEstimated: $1,200–$1,800 per person

Four days portaging into the Boundary Waters via Williams & Hall Outfitters out of Ely—canoes loaded with camp gear, paddles dipping into mirror-still lakes at dawn, the ritual of portage trails threading between pine and birch. Nights in canvas wall tents on remote campsites, loon calls echoing across water, cast-iron dinners of walleye and wild rice cooked over fire. The final night: a sauna ceremony at Burntside Lodge, wood-fired heat and plunge into the dark lake, then a dinner of smoked fish and root vegetables in the lodge's timber dining room—the kind of decompression that rewires the nervous system.

Questions

Do we need canoeing experience?
No—Williams & Hall guides teach proper paddle technique and portage rhythm on day one. Most trips are moderate-pace, with plenty of float time to absorb the silence.
What about bugs and weather?
June and July have mosquitoes; August and September are clearer. Bring DEET, lightweight rain shells, and embrace the mist—it's part of the spell.
How remote are we really?
Completely—no cell service, no other groups on your lakes. The guides carry a satellite communicator for emergencies only. This is genuine wilderness.
