Saugatuck on Lake Michigan's east shore — a Midwest queer-friendly arts town with thirty-plus galleries, Mt. Baldhead's 260-step climb, and Oval Beach's white sand and sunset positioning. Sleep at the Wickwood Inn — eleven rooms in a 1937 colonial-revival home (Frank Wicks built it; a James Beard-trained chef named Julee Rosso bought it in the 1990s and runs it as a B&B with a serious breakfast and a daily social hour). Day one: dinner at Phil's Bar & Grille on the harbor (scallop pad thai, lamb lollops, the lake view). Day two: a Mt. Baldhead climb at sunrise, the Chain Ferry across the Kalamazoo River (1857, hand-cranked), an afternoon at Oval Beach, gallery hopping in the late afternoon, dinner at Coral Gables. Day three: a Saugatuck Dunes State Park hike, a Saugatuck Brewing pint, the drive back to Chicago (2.5 hours) or Grand Rapids (45 min).
