FAME Studios on East Avalon Avenue is where Aretha cut 'Respect' and 'I Never Loved a Man'; Muscle Shoals Sound Studio at 3614 Jackson Highway is where the Stones cut 'Brown Sugar' and 'Wild Horses.' Both still operate as recording studios; both run hourly tours. Sleep at the GunRunner Boutique Hotel in Florence — an old hardware store turned 10-room music-themed hotel above a coffee shop. Day-one tours of FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound back-to-back; afternoon at the W.C. Handy Home (the Father of the Blues' birthplace). Dinner at Odette in Florence (modern Southern). Day two: Wilson Dam tour for the engineering side, Dismals Canyon hike for the off-record afternoon, dinner at Singin' River Brewing. Huntsville (HSV) and Birmingham (BHM) are the gateways.

Are the studios actually still working?
Yes — FAME has active sessions; Muscle Shoals Sound is a museum/studio hybrid (recordings still happen; tours run between sessions). Both confirm session calendars before tour schedules.
Combo ticket?
FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound are separately ticketed ($15-20 each). Both are an hour. Allot a half-day for the pair.
GunRunner — is it actually charming?
Yes — converted hardware store, coffee shop downstairs, music-themed rooms (Aretha, Stones, Skynyrd). 10 rooms means it books out fast — 3 months ahead in spring/fall.
Best month?
March-April or October-November. July-August is Alabama humidity — unpleasant. Dismals Canyon is a 90-minute drive south but the photo trip on a hot day.
