Saturday is a slow walk on Whitefish Dunes State Park (Wisconsin's tallest dunes, 93 feet, glacier-carved sand on Lake Michigan), brunch at the Sage in Egg Harbor, a stop at Door 44 Vineyard for a Frontenac tasting flight. Saturday-night dinner at the Whistling Swan in Fish Creek (a 1888 stagecoach inn). Sunday: an early walk at Cave Point County Park to watch the lake-bashed limestone cliffs at sunrise, brunch at Wild Tomato (wood-fired pizzas, sourcing the Wisconsin growers list). Decompression: a glass of cherry wine on the porch at the Whistling Swan before the drive back to Green Bay.

Why shoulder season?

May and late September skip the cherry-week and fall-foliage crowds. The water is still warm enough for the morning walk, the inns have shoulder pricing, and the wine tasting rooms are quieter.

It's a Lake Michigan beach — but the 93-foot dunes are unique to the eastern Door County shore. The Old Baldy boardwalk gives a view to the horizon.
