An old copper-mining boomtown frozen in Victorian brick five miles from the Mexican border. Sleep at the Copper Queen Hotel (1902, John Wayne and Theodore Roosevelt both stayed) or the Shady Dell — fourteen vintage 1940s-50s travel trailers parked in a row, each restored, each with its own kitsch. Day one: a Queen Mine Tour descent into the working copper mine, a slow afternoon at the galleries on Main Street, dinner at Cafe Roka (1992, fresh pasta, the local institution). Day two: a street-art walking tour, the Bisbee Mining Museum, brewery hours at Old Bisbee Brewing. The drive out via Tombstone is the additional hour worth taking. Tucson (TUS) is 90 minutes; Phoenix (PHX) is 3.5 hours.
