Destination: Rutherford, CANights: 3Group: 414Season: April, May, June, September, October, NovemberEstimated: $3,800–$5,800 per person

Auberge Resorts' founding property — a Mediterranean villa on a hillside above Rutherford with a 33-acre olive grove and 50 suites. The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil holds 18 consecutive Michelin stars under chef Robert Curry; Wine Spectator Grand Award since the program started. Dawn hot-air balloon flights launch from the valley floor and land on the terrace for a champagne-and-eggs breakfast. Day two: a Soleil Trail hike past the 100-piece sculpture garden, vineyard yoga at La Pagode (the Japanese ryokan pavilion), a cellar dinner with the chef. Day three is a private tasting at one of the Rutherford Bench cabernets — Caymus, Quintessa, Inglenook — before the drive back to SFO.

Questions

Hot-air balloon — really lands on the terrace?
Most flights land in a vineyard near the property; the operator does breakfast on Auberge's terrace as the closing. 6 a.m. launch, 9 a.m. champagne. $350-450 per guest.
Best season?
April-May for spring blooms, September-November for harvest energy (peak rates and book six-month-out). December-February has the best room rates and the rains add a drama the photos miss.
Vineyard yoga at La Pagode?
Yes — sunrise yoga in the Japanese ryokan pavilion, 7 a.m. start. Private group sessions for the bridal party available with 2-week notice.
How does the property compare to neighbors?
Auberge is the hillside cinematic — the views, the olive grove, the sense of having left America. Meadowood is the country-club apex (still recovering from the fire). Calistoga Ranch hasn't reopened. Auberge is the call.
