Athens 40 Watt + Hugh Acheson Indie Weekend — Athens, GA

Athens grew R.E.M., the B-52s, and Neutral Milk Hotel — a college-town indie heritage that still books shows at the 40 Watt Club six-to-seven nights a week. Sleep at the Graduate Athens (campus-themed hotel) or the Hotel Indigo downtown. Day one: dinner at The National (chef Hugh Acheson's New Southern flagship), a 40 Watt show that night. Day two: Last Resort Grill for brunch (Acheson's early-career restaurant, now run by alumni), the State Botanical Garden, By George (the Acheson dinner that replaced his Five & Ten). Day three: a campus walk past the Tree That Owns Itself (1832 oak deeded to itself), brunch at Ike & Jane, the slow drive back to ATL (90 minutes).

Questions

Is the 40 Watt actually historic, or is it a tourist version?
Genuinely historic. R.E.M.'s residency, B-52s shows, Drive-By Truckers album-launch nights — and the booking calendar still pulls touring indie acts. Cover $10-25; check 40watt.com a week ahead for the bachelorette dates.
Hugh Acheson — is he still in town?
Acheson's Five & Ten closed; The National and By George are still in his orbit (alum chefs, his recipes still on menus). Last Resort Grill is the institution.
Football weekend or non-football?
Saturday home games turn Athens into wall-to-wall — book lodging 6 months ahead, pay 2-3x. Non-football weekends are quieter, more affordable, the bridal party gets the town to themselves.
Vs Asheville or Nashville?
Smaller. More indie-coded (less commercial than Nashville, more campus than Asheville). The 40 Watt is the reason — there's no equivalent intimate live venue with the same booking pedigree.
